Do you know why having a podcast is pure magic for building online engagement, social media platforms and digital communities? Every episode gives you endless amounts of content. I know what you’re thinking – Morgan, how can a 30-minute podcast give me endless amounts of content? It’s one episode.
The answer is, your content is the promotion for the episode and your episode is the product. This is why you should always strive to create the highest quality podcast episodes that will serve the greatest number of your audience. If you have nothing worth promoting, you have nothing worth buying.
This should be the most obvious way to stretch your reach with a podcast episode, but you’d be surprised how few podcasters actually take the time to create social media posts! Whether it’s a pull quote from yourself or a guest, a statistic that you cover in the episode, a fun fact about something you talk about or even a meme corresponding to the episode, make fun engaging content that will drive your listener to the episode.
Make them want more! Engage the audience with what they’re already interested in to bring them into your episode. This can be anything from Facebook and Instagram posts, to Pinterest pins, to LinkedIn articles and posts, to TikTok and short form video content. If you aren’t taking the time to make corresponding content from your podcasts to share with your audience you’re doing your podcast and your community a disservice.
It amazes me in 2024 how many people still doubt the power of blogging and blog posts. You’re reading on a blog right now! The truth is, making blogs about your podcast is one of the easiest ways to turn your podcast into a searchable, valuable resource that will generate traffic for your website and drive listeners to your podcast.
If you are a podcaster that doesn’t have a blog I urge you to start this week. Start simple. Create a blog post for each podcast moving forward describing the episode, what the listener can expect and use keywords to help Google find your blog when someone is searching. Make sure to include at least one link to your episode! As you get more accustomed to this practice make sure to add your episode transcript, time stamps, links to relevant resources and any other episodes the reader might want to listen to.
Now I know we’re getting into it now, but stay with me. Just like blogging, email lists are one of the most powerful tools that companies, influencers, small businesses, big businesses and you should be using to grow your online community and “know, like, trust” factor. Maybe you already know this but you’re held back by making all that content. Who has the time? And you’re right! Who has the time? Now you do! Because we’re going to take the podcast you’re creating every week, break down why the reader should listen and send them over to the blog or podcast! See how this works? You don’t have to rethink the wheel every week! Infact, I don’t think you should. By repurposing your content you’re able to properly market and remind your audience to listen. These are powerful methods every podcaster and business owner should be using!
We can create and post video content for our podcast a few different ways. The first way most of us are familiar with is by recording the podcast with both audio and video components. Think Ear Biscuits, Joe Rogan, Brittany Broski – these creators record their podcast on video simultaneously as they record the audio and cut up the video to post short form, long form and audio.
If you’re like me and you still find it difficult to record a full episode talking into the camera. That’s fine! My secret for you is to record your podcast episode, transcribe it and get a cheap/free teleprompter app. Now you have more power to create whatever length content you’d like. Either record your full episode and post that or create shorter segment clips and teaser clips. Whatever works best for your podcasting and delivery style! Don’t forget to link these videos in your blog post and emails.
Here’s the truth. Podcasting is hard. Promoting a podcast is even harder.
It takes me anywhere from 10-20 hours to write, record, produce, publish and promote one episode (and that’s after producing hundreds of episodes). Use your podcast analytics and data to see what your audience wants to hear. Don’t ignore that episode that has drastically lower downloads – or the one with drastically more! You need to know what your audience wants to hear and how you can better serve their needs.
Without the listeners there isn’t a podcast. All this being said, use your podcast data to determine what is working in your podcast and your marketing. What is your audience connecting to? How can you produce more content like this? Use the numbers to help you understand where you are and where you need to go instead of randomly thinking of topics you think are fun.
Creating a podcast repurposing strategy should be part of every podcaster’s launch plan, but too often it’s left behind in the shuffle of just trying to create the podcast. Wherever you are in this journey, remember you work too hard to have a podcast no one listens to. Make sure you’re educating, empowering and reminding your audience to listen to your episodes and watch how your podcast transforms!
