If you’ve been on TikTok or LinkedIn in the past few weeks, you’ve probably heard it—October is the new January. And if you want your New Year’s resolutions to stick, start them now!
Like every resoultion it sounds like a good idea until real life creeps in. And while I don’t necessarily agree with waiting for a specific month to make changes to your podcast (or life) – I do believe small changes make a big impact over time.
That’s why I’m already looking ahead to Q1 of 2025, and I want to share the three key strategies I’m starting right now to grow my podcast next year.
Short Form Videos: The first—and admittedly the most uncomfortable—thing I’m starting now is filming short-form, straight-to-camera videos. These are the kinds of videos you’d see on TikTok, YouTube Shorts, or Instagram Reels. It’s basically just me talking directly to the camera, whether it’s about an episode, podcasting tips, or something about myself.
Why am I doing this? Because these informal, personal videos are what people want to see. It feels like a one-on-one conversation. And while it’s hard for me as someone who likes to curate every inch of my social media, the numbers don’t lie.
People want authenticity, not overly polished content. So, I’m pushing myself out of my comfort zone because I know it’s what my audience needs. If you haven’t started doing this, I encourage you to start now—no fancy equipment required, just your phone and something to say!
No One Cares About Your “New Episode”: I’ve been so guilty of promoting my episode like this: “New episode out now! Listen here!” And guess what? No one cares. Simply having a new episode isn’t news—it’s expected. So, I’m shifting how I promote my episodes by giving people a taste of the content instead of just announcing it.
For example, I recently saw a TikTok where podcasters were talking about Halloween costumes that need to be retired and when they might be acceptable to be worn again. It was so funny, and guess what? I followed their podcast. I took the time to go off the app I was on, open Apple Podcasts, find their podcast and click subscribe (which as you know, is kind of a lot to ask someone mindlessly scrolling). They hooked me with their content, not an announcement.
Leaning Into YouTube: I’ve been avoiding YouTube for a while—not because I don’t like it, but because it’s another platform to manage. But here’s the thing: YouTube is the fastest-growing podcast platform. So, for 2025, I’m committing to posting more content on YouTube.
I’ve already been posting my audio podcasts with static images, but now I’m adding casual weekly videos where I talk about podcasting tips, editing, or how to use tools like ChatGPT. Nothing fancy, just me, my laptop, and Loom. This makes sense for the time I have, and it drives more people to follow my YouTube channel.
In-person events are my next big focus for 2025. And no, I don’t just mean podcast conferences.
I truly believe in-person interactions and networking is one of the easiest ways to grow your business, network and of course podcast. Talk about your podcast, follow people you meet on social media, get their contact information and follow up!
My motto: AI won’t replace us, but people who use AI will. For 2025, I’m diving even deeper into integrating AI into my podcast workflow.
Oh, and if you’re not already using ChatGPT to make your podcasting life easier, check out my free download with my 4 favorite ChatGPT prompts for podcasters. These are the prompts I use every week, and they’re perfect for anyone, even if you’re just starting with AI.
