Do you want to host podcast interviews that your audience will actually want to listen to?
As a podcaster you need to know how to plan, conduct and produce an incredible podcast interview. Whether you’re thinking about starting a podcast, you have a solo show, interview-style show or you’re not really sure what you’re doing, this episode is for you.
I’ve written, produced and recorded hundreds of virtual and in-person interviews and through the trials and tribulations (of which there were many), I’ve created several fool proof methods that will help you figure out not only what to ask, but how to conduct yourself in an interview your audience will love.
Finding Relevant High-Quality Guests
Having the right guests will make your podcast stand out. Alternatively, the opposite is also true. My best advice to podcasters is to have a set of criteria you judge your guests against. It’s about quality over quantity. Don’t just invite anyone; invite the guests who will bring useful information and conversation to your audience.
The Biggest Podcast Interview Mistake Podcasters Make
The biggest mistake podcast hosts make? Not researching your guest enough. This leads to boring, predictable interviews. Get to know your guest well enough to create a conversation that’s not the same podcast they’ve recorded a dozen times before.
How to Create the Best Questions for Your Podcast Interview
Do the work before the episode to set up a pre-interview either on the phone or via questionnaire with your guest. You cannot research your way into the questions that actually need to be asked. Schedule a time with them or send them a questionnaire with these questions!
What You Can Do to Set Up Your Podcast Guest for Success
It’s your job to make your guests look and sound good. This means ensuring they have the right setup and feel comfortable. Give clear instructions on how to prepare and what to expect. This not only improves the quality of your podcast but also makes your guest willing to share it.
The Unforgivable Podcast Interview Question
Never start with “Tell me a little about yourself.” This is the laziest question you can ask a guest and puts way too much pressure on your guest. As the host you should always introduce your guest with a compelling introduction and dive into engaging questions right away.
How to Correctly Promote and Share Podcast Interview Episodes
Find out where your guests are online and create content that will serve them. Share any material you’ve made about their episode with them, but take the initiative yourself to do the majority of the promotion and try to make it as easy as possible for them to share.
