I went to my first podcast conference in 2021. Like most people there, my first question after meeting someone was: what is your podcast about? Would you believe me if I told you more than half of the people I asked (at a podcast convention – for podcasters) didn’t have a podcast? It’s true!
We get so obsessed with doing something perfectly we lose sight of why we’re doing it in the first place. No one is perfect on their first podcast episode, or 3rd, or 10th, or ever! But you know who’s getting better at it every week? The people who are actively recording and publishing episodes.
This week’s episode is for all my listeners who (like me) would wait until the night before a project was due, or quite literally can’t finish something without a deadline. This is how you’re going to launch a podcast by next month and the 4 weeks of work you’ll do to get there!
Week 1: Podcast Concept and Niching Down
The first step is all about clarity – who’s your podcast for, and what’s it about? You might have a broad idea, but specificity is your best friend here. Niching down might feel restrictive, but it’s actually liberating. It allows you to speak directly to those who will cherish and engage with your content the most.
Create a detailed profile of your ideal listener. What do they love? What are their biggest pain points? This week, you’re also going to snoop around a bit – what podcasts are they currently into? This isn’t about imitation; it’s about inspiration. By week’s end, you should have a crystal-clear concept and a keen understanding of your audience.
Week 2: Equipment and Episode Outlines
Depending on your budget and ambitions, your equipment needs will vary, but remember: starting simple is perfectly fine. This week is for testing, trial and error– make sure you know how your gear works and that you’re comfortable using it.
Also crucial during week two is outlining your first episodes. Break your topics into digestible chunks; think three key points that your listener can easily follow. Aim to have four episodes fully outlined and ready for recording.
Week 3: Setting Up and Recording
It’s getting real now! Week three is about laying the foundation for your podcast’s online presence. Choose a hosting platform like Buzzsprout and get acquainted with it. This platform will be the launchpad for your podcast, distributing it across various channels.
Now you need to record your first four episodes. Yes, it might feel awkward, and yes, it might not be perfect, but the beauty of podcasting lies in growth and learning. Remember, every great podcaster started with a single, often shaky, step.
Week 4: Edit, Schedule, and Promote
Editing is where the magic happens. It’s where you polish your content, add music, and perhaps an intro and outro. Don’t get bogged down by perfectionism; aim for clarity and consistency instead. By now, you should be ready to schedule your launch and promote your upcoming podcast.
Spread the word far and wide. Utilize your social networks, email lists, and even personal connections. Your enthusiasm and energy are contagious – let them work in your favor as you drum up excitement for your launch.
Launch Day and Beyond
Congratulations! You’ve made it to launch day. But the journey doesn’t end here. Podcasting is an ongoing adventure of creation, connection, and community building.
