The human attention span is 8.25 seconds. That means when someone ask you about your podcast you have roughly 8 seconds to hook their attention and start your podcast elevator pitch in a meaningful way.
In this episode we’ll break down how to answer what your podcast is about, the most important elements of any podcast pitch and how to guarantee the person you’re talking to will not only remember your show, but listen after you walk away.
Why You Need an Elevator Pitch for Your Podcast
Has anyone ever asked you, “So, what’s your podcast about?” and you’ve found yourself stumbling through what to say? You only get a few seconds to make a first impression. That’s why having a concise and well-crafted podcast pitch is critical to your success as a podcaster.
Crafting Your Pitch: Step-by-Step Guide
1. Start Simple
Begin by explaining the main topic of your podcast. This shouldn’t be detailed, but instead a broad stroke that captures the core theme of your show. For instance, if you run a podcast about entrepreneurship for first-time business owners, you might start with, “My podcast is about how first-time entrepreneurs can launch and scale their startups to make their first million dollars.”
2. Identify Your Audience
Clearly specify who your podcast is for. This helps the person you’re pitching immediately understand whether your podcast is of interest for them or not. Continuing with the entrepreneurship example, you might add, “It’s designed to give actionable, step-by-step advice on how to go from a business making zero dollars to one million in less than 5-years.”
3. Highlight the Takeaway
What can listeners expect to gain by listening? This is your chance to sell the value of your podcast. You might say, “I started this podcast to teach young business owners all the lessons I’ve had to learn the hard way, especially when it comes to money management. Making your first million isn’t hard, but you have to know what to do.”
4. End with a Strong Call-to-Action
Don’t let them walk away. By the time you’ve finished these few sentences, chances are this person has totally forgot what the name of your podcast is, but they’re too scared to ask you to repeat it. If you’re talking in person, say something like, “If you want to pull up Apple Podcasts or Spotify, and search for [Your Podcast Name]. I’ll show you which one it is!”
Examples of Effective Podcast Pitches
To give you a better idea of how this works in practice, here are a couple of examples:
First-Time Homebuyers Podcast: “My podcast helps first-time homebuyers understand how to prepare for, find and purchase their first home. As a Real Estate Agent for the past decade, and the first person to purchase property in my family, I’m passionate about helping people buy their first home and know what to expect.”
Plant Care Podcast: “I created this podcast for anyone that loves houseplants, caring for plants and learning about how to be a better plant parent. In this podcast I bring together farmers, plant store owners and plant lovers to talk about plants, plant care and how plants improve our life.”
Your Podcast Isn’t for Everyone (That’s a Good Thing!)
Remember, not everyone will be interested in your podcast, and that’s okay. It’s not a reflection of your podcast’s value but rather an indication of varying interests. The faster you can figure out who isn’t interested in your podcast you start reaching the people who are!
Creating an effective elevator pitch for your podcast is about clarity, empowerment and engagement. By focusing on what your podcast does, who it’s for, and what listeners can gain, you can create a compelling pitch that captures attention and encourages new listeners to tune in. This is one of the most important marketing tools you can use for turning interest into listeners.
